Too often the basics of patient handling are taken for granted. Improper lifting and moving patients can cause injury and damage to you, the patient and your organization. Industry statistics show that patient drops are a leading cause for claims of negligence. The EMS industry estimates there are an estimated 42,000 patient drops annually. VFIS is concerned about these statistics and encourages your organization to take into account the following items: cardiac arrest in adults, children, and infants.
  • Proper selection and use of equipment
  • Proper balance/strength of crews
  • Proper evaluation of scene hazards
  • Proper maintenance of equipment
  • Equipment Failure & Malfunctions
Course Content
  • Assess the scene for hazards that may inhibit moving the patient safely
  • Select and utilize the proper lifting
  • Know the weights you’re about to lift
  • Know your physical abilities and limitations and also those of your partner
  • Use proper lifting techniques
  • Communicate clearly and frequently with your partner(s).
  • Don’t hesitate to request assistance with the lift or movement of the patient

After successfully completing this course, students should be able to demonstrate the practical applications for providing safety and injury reduction while lifting and moving patients.
